Google is killing its “ Travel ” sync 'n' share document locker in two ways.
For users of Google's G Suite clients, death comes into play the kind of a fresh desktop program called “Drive File Stream” that does just about everything Drive does now, but which Google from “enables you to access all your Google Drive data files on demand quickly, from your computer directly, meaning you use almost none of your hard disk drive space and spend less period looking forward to files to sync. ”
Saturday document Stream has been obtainable since last, meaning “Google Drive for Macintosh/PC is deprecated officially. On December 11th ” The old application is still around, but support ends, 2017. Google it'll turn off on March 12th completely, 2018.
Document Stream lets users define which data files they want to be stashed away locally - which might sound painful until you take into account that some users might use shared Drives, or seldom enjoy fast connections or use notebooks with limited storage. In nearly any of those scenarios, sucking down a whole Drive could be unwelcome automatically, so this noticeable change is going down well.
Any data you have in Getting is not going away just since the application of the same name will be deceased. But arrive March 12, 2018, users will have to obtain paws on either the brand new File Stream customer or Google Back-up and Sync if they would like to see their data.
Why two apps? That's where issues get complicated: G Suite users are becoming herded towards Document Stream but could also decide to use Google's “ Back-up and Sync” software instead.
That second application will replace the consumer version of Drive. Backup and Sync can be an already-available software that will what it said on the can - but provides photographs to the mix. Once again, data are not heading anywhere. But by tying photographs to a document locker, Google probably expectations it is making its consumer solutions rather stickier. Which it requires given Facebook will keep punters' pics in perpetuity, but Google+ can be a punchline of social media history.
Google warns that G Suite users “ may begin seeing messages in the merchandise notifying them that Travel for Mac/PC is certainly going away” by an unspecified day time in October. G Suite admins are therefore going to need to be ready to clarify themselves.
Just what consumers label of this tangle is anyone's guess
